Day 9 - Art & Design

The great thing about home design and decorating is that you do not need to follow any rules  to create a very personal, comfortable and inspiring space.

The goal is creating a room that is functional for all, with convenient storage; but also attractive and pleasant to the eye.

Inspiring home ideas

Bright and comfortable include interior design that includes paint, furniture and other finishing touches, such as window treatments. Colors that allow to  you to live and work comfortably with hues that are pleasing to the eye. Natural light is great, but also explore different lighting options.  A trip to Home Depot, or a lighting store can offer you suggestions you may not ordinarily think of.

Convenient storage and organization enhance your space, adding a neat look and a place to put objects that would create clutter, cleverly and easily out of sight. Open shelves, storage containers, and storage furniture on wheels are functional and attractive options as well.

Wall Work

Whenever I watch TV, one thing that always stands out for me is when I notice a lack of art work on walls.  It’s like the walls are screaming for personality, and the room feels unfinished.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on fine art, although there are local artists whose art is within many price ranges.  You would be supporting an artist, making an investment, and adding something special and personal to your space.

Another way is to choose photographs that you love of family, friends, pets, even objects, and get them blown up and framed.  You can take a color photo and make it black & white if that suits your aesthetic.  Visit a local art store and ask for suggestions on the best way to showcase a picture you have.

You can also use wallpaper to add pattern and texture to your walls, placing it in unusual places like the ceiling, alcoves and on the floor.  You can also add unique shelving options.  The options are endless, limited only by your imagination.

For the kitchen or bathroom, changing hardware is a quick upgrade that can change the look of the whole room without breaking the bank.

Textiles, like rugs, throw blankets and pillows are simple finishing touches which truly make a room feel finished. Like adding a coat of paint, they provide a quick and easy reboot to any room.

Break The Rules

Don’t be afraid to break the rules!  Buy design magazines and spend some time on pinterest.  That's what I use as my mood + vision board.  Just type in what you're looking for and pin away!

There is no need be perfect. Take your time, don't rush. Visit home decor stores and see what you like.  It will all come together over time, and around the way you and your family live.  Your house doesn’t have to look like your mother’s, your grandmothers, or a magazine spread.  Where we choose to live is uniquely personal to our lifestyle and spirit.

Bring yourself to your space. Create a space that you hate to leave and love to come home to.
